Gloss Resin
Gloss Resin is a product made from mixing Wax in Styrene, Styrene Monomer with Laminating Resin. It is used after Surfboard Filler application and is often referred to as the Finish Coat.
As the name suggests, Gloss Resin is the layer of resin used to create a gloss (polished) finsih after the polishing process.
Please note, all Gloss Resin purchased is sold as a “Filler Kit”, this helps ensure optimal performance and improved shelf life of the resin. The Filler Kit includes Laminating Resin PLUS Wax in Styrene and Sytrebe Momnomer to simply create a Gloss Resin. Please note, an ample quantity of Wax in Styrene and Styrene Monomer is supplied.
The base resin is a Hi-Lite Resi Formula and is used by Australia's leading Surfboard Glassers.
- Sold in 1L and 4L Drums
- Gloss resin is a waxed and thinned Resin, easily sandable polyester resin designed to be used as the final surfboard glassing process.
- The resin is formulated with a blue tint to enhance the whiteness of the board. Non blue tint resin will have a slight yellow tint and will brown off faster.
- Wax in Styrene is designed to form an air-tight layer on the surface of a resin that can affect the curing process. Testing is therefore recommended to determine an optimal mix based on environmental conditions and user preferences.
- Catalyst (MEKP and SUNBAKE UV Cure) is required to cure resin and is sold separately. Please note, a curing agent is require to set the resin hard.

Converting Laminating Resin into a Filler Resin is a relatively simple process, achieved through adding Wax in Styrene and Styrene Monomer.

As a guide, a 3% ratio of Wax in Styrene and 3% Styrene Monomer, is mixed with Laminating Resin.
For example, 30mls of Wax in Styrene and 30mls of Styrene Monomer would be used to convert 1 Litre of Laminating Resin to Filler Resin. Please refer to the chart below for quick reference.
Wax in Styrene should be mixed well into Laminating Resin prior to adding Catalyst (MEKP or Shapers Sunbake UV additive).

MKEP Conversion
MEKP is a Catalyst which is used to cure (harden) Polyester Resin (PE).
MEKP is generally mixed at 0.5 - 1.5% ratio. Depending on desired curing speed and environmental factors.
Testing is recommended pior use.
