Filler Resin
Filler Resin is a product made from mixing Wax in Styrene with Laminating Resin. It is used after Surfboard Lamination and is often referred to as the Hot Coat, Filler Coat or Sand (Sanding) Coat. As the name suggests, Filler Resin, fills in gaps left after laminating the fibreglass, creating a smooth finish. Filler Resin once cured creates an air-tight layer on the surface of the resin, that allows the resin to be sanded.
Please note, all Filler Resin purchased is sold as a “Filler Kit”, this helps ensure optimal performance and improved shelf life of the resin. The Filler Kit includes Laminating Resin PLUS Wax in Styrene to simply create a Filler Resin. Please note, an ample quantity of Wax in Styrene is supplied.
The base resin is a Hi-Lite Resi Formula and is used by Australia's leading Surfboard Glassers.

- Filler resin is a waxed, easily sanded polyester resin designed to be used in the surfboard glassing process
- The resin is formulated with a blue tint to enhance the whiteness of the board. Non blue tint resin will have a slight yellow tint and will brown off faster.
- Wax in Styrene is designed to form an air-tight layer on the surface of a resin that can affect the curing process. Testing is therefore recommended to determine an optimal mix based on environmental conditions and user preferences.
- Catalyst (MEKP and SUNBAKE UV Cure) is required to cure resin and is sold separately. Please note, a curing agent is require to set the resin hard.

Converting Laminating Resin into a Filler Resin is a relatively simple process, achieved through adding Wax in Styrene.

As a guide, a 3% ratio of Wax in Styrene, is mixed with Laminating Resin. For example, 30mls of Wax in Styrene would be used to convert 1 Litre of Laminating Resin to Filler Resin. Please refer to the chart below for quick reference.
Wax in Styrene should be mixed well into Laminating Resin prior to adding Catalyst (MEKP or Shapers Sunbake UV additive).

MKEP Conversion
MEKP is a Catalyst which is used to cure (harden) Polyester Resin (PE).
MEKP is generally mixed at 0.5 - 1.5% ratio. Depending on desired curing speed and environmental factors.
Testing is recommended pior use.
